Mozdev.org is our OpenSource community and one of the thing you MUST do is placing the source on the site with the used license, you still seem to miss that. Also note that we, QuickPrefs already offer this, same counts for MultiZilla so why start a new project instead of working on current implementations?

However, good to have to on mozdev.org
Good Luck and happy programming

Just installed 2002-11-12: Preferential 0.2.1 (Bugfix)

Opens only empty window - with menu and empty listbox... :-(

[9] Submitted by: TroubleMaker on Tuesday November 12th 2002

Hmmm... after dl-ing Mozilla 2002111211 all become normal. I'm just happy. :-)

[10] Submitted by: GuruJ on Wednesday November 13th 2002

Ah, great -- nice to see you got it working. Let me know if you have any other features you'd like to see in Preferential.

[11] Submitted by: TroubleMaker on Thursday November 14th 2002

Now (on 2002111308) it looks a little "hebrewish" - columns in the window are: (left to right)
type, status, value, name, description
I don't know happened :)

As to wishlist:

1. _Resizable_ _window_!!!

2. edit-in-place or at least edit on double-click

3. sortable and re-arrangeable columns

4. bookmarking or position marking system

5. _undo_!!!

It's all wishes for now :) Thank you!

[12] Submitted by: TroubleMaker on Thursday November 14th 2002

one more wish: I don't know if it's possible, but... but it would be good idea to have few more tree controls: "expand/contract entire branch with sub-branches"
(the tree itself also may be concidered as a branch)

[14] Submitted by: Tsahi on Friday November 15th 2002

i was waiting for an add-on of this kind. but looking at the screen shots, i think you should re-think about the design. what does "accesibility.tabfocus" mean? you should put it all in preferences panels, like the current preferences panel mozilla has, so people can understand what each preference mean. and preferably, put it inside the mozilla prefereces panel.

I install the XPI, and restart the browser as directed, but "Advanced Preferences" fails to appear in my "Edit" menu. (I am using Linux, and a 1.2b+ nightly)

[16] Submitted by: Erik Harris on Sunday November 24th 2002

How long should this take to start the first time, and does it work in Moz 1.2a? I get "Building Tree..." and a moving bar at the bottom when I try to go to my "Advanced Preferences." I can let it build the tree for 30-40 minutes and nothing happens.

[17] Submitted by: Erik Arvidsson on Monday November 25th 2002

Nice one,

A few comments:

Please add splitters between columns and persist the ordinal.

Make double click open up the edit pref dialog.

This should really replace the about:config at some point.

[18] Submitted by: Rob H on Wednesday November 27th 2002

I get the same as Erik Harris on 1.2 final.

[19] Submitted by: GuruJ on Thursday November 28th 2002

Rob H/Erik H,

It sounds like you are getting a JavaScript error of some sort. Try this:

* In a browser window, click Tools -> Web Development -> JavaScript Console. Click 'Clear'.
* Return to your original browser window, and click Edit -> Advanced Preferences.
* Return to the window entitled JavaScript console, and report any messages you see here.

Thanks! GuruJ.

Hi - excellent extension.

Just one more request - could you either make it available from a button (that works with Phoenix customisable toolbars) or if not, make it available from the Edit menu in the mail/news window too. I use Moz for mail and Phoenix for web browsing (looking forwards to Thunderbird/Minotaur) so it's a ain having to start a moz browser window to get to Advanced Prefs...

Keep up the good work.

I get the same Building Tree problem in 1.2 final; here is what the JavaScript console says for me
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [nsIPrefBranch.getBoolPref]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://preferential/content/preferential.js :: prefLoadTree :: line 157" data: no]

[23] Submitted by: GuruJ on Thursday December 12th 2002

ndebord -
You still should be able to access Preferential in K-Meleon if the XPI installs OK. In your browser, type:
chrome://preferential/content/preferential.xul and then bookmark the page that loads.

nige -
I checked into your request -- unfortunately, Mozilla currently doesn't identify the 'Edit' menupopup by name in Messenger. This makes it impossible (as far as I am aware) to add entries to the 'Edit' menu. I have submitted a bug to Mozilla re: this problem.

RFE: This is a great tool, but it would be even better if it could filter or find. I especially like the way that the bookmarks work in Phoenix to filter on keyword (Moz Mail shows the same behavior). Any plans for such features?

[28] Submitted by: GuruJ on Monday December 30th 2002

Ken,

Both Filtering and Finding are slated for inclusion in the next release of Preferential.

First, at the top of this Notes page, you say that if one wants a response, provide an e-mail address, but since there is no e-mail address entry box, it is not clear where to put it.

For the Preferential - Advanced Preferences Configuration window, it would be nice to have a horizontal scroll bar, so that columns could be expanded to show more of the Name, Value, and Description and still be able to see all the text. As the font size in this window appears to be unchangeable much of either or both the Value and Description fields can't be seen.

You might also consider using a different font color for default and user set values, a very handy feature of the about:config browser window. And the Edit Preference window cuts off the bottom half of the OK & Cancel buttons.

I've posted a bug for localization :
http://mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=2841

When you make a New Preference, the Boolean Value is "true" or "False", and those two texts are not already localizated...
I suppose it's yust a mistake...

Very good addon !!!

Please join your efforts with HJ and the Multizilla/Quickpres team.
One of the real bad things here at Mozdev that I found as a simple user-only, that there often are a confusing number of projects, sometimes *really* great ideas, many of them targeting the same or very similar goals and unfortunately after a few months, they quietly die, like Total-Recall/Aphrodite, that very regrettably doesn't work right any more with latest nightlies.

So please, don't try to invent the wheel over and over again in different groups, but join your ideas and visions and put your common effort in building the *car*.

[33] Submitted by: GuruJ on Sunday January 12th 2003

Hi Wolfi,

Thanks for your feedback. I understand that the QuickPrefs team are pursuing a project similar to mine, but I feel that our goals are sufficiently different to be worth pursuing separately.

In this case, QuickPrefs is not designed to allow *every* pref to be edited, nor to provide comprehensive help on each preference. Preferential is designed to be a reference guide as well as an Advanced Preferences Editor.

Looks REALLY useful! Is there an option somewhere that will prevent browsing of the local hardrive when the user types / or c: into the URL field?

Thanks!

[35] Submitted by: Rasselas on Monday February 3rd 2003

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, Thanks! So many options it makes me poor head spin! Maybe just a tad more description on some of the items (like what is browsing with a caret (cursor))? All the same, very useful program and though it looks intimidating it doens't take a brain to figure out the gist of it. Thanks again!

I somewhat agree and though I read your reply, I wonder if you have seen the new release of quickprefs which includes as the second option in the menu "Preference Editor"??? It has all 1130 options available for editing... fairly similar see?

It's preference editor is very similar, just that it does not include folders and subfolders, descriptions of what the preferences do, doesn't have automatic subset choices for things like "1=never, 2=always". Also, you can't create or delete preferences

On the plus side, their menu loads quite a bit faster (albeit i admit i drive a celeron 400mhz) AND it has a "Restore to Default" button which to me is very handy and reassuring.

Other than that, your all's preference editors are very similar to me (on the whole) at the MOMENT. I'm sure you plan on updating yours alot though (but then, so do they). Just throwing something at you cause they have a great team over there and maybe you would want to combine forces in your quests to take over planet moz.

:)

Or not, all the same, wonderful plug! Thanks again, and thanks to all who submit bugs and preference descriptions!

[37] Submitted by: DJ on Tuesday February 25th 2003

This is a really helpful capability, but it is not always obvious what the preferences actually *do*. For instance, what exactly does mailnews.nav_crosses_folders do, and what are the valid integer values? Or network.protocol-handler.external.hcp ?

Is there some documentation of these? (outside of the source tree, that is?)

Thx

*** Failed to load overlay chrome://preferential/content/preferential-nav-overlay.xul

This is the warning I get after I install Preferential as root on NS7.02 and then launch NS7.02 as regular user. It works as root. The NS7.02 install is the one straight from NS on Redhat7.3. To me it seems like a bug because I did not do anything special. Well, I decided not to use it anyways :)

Thanks for reading,

Andreas

[39] Submitted by: GuruJ on Sunday March 2nd 2003

Thanks for your comments, DJ & Andreas.

DJ: That's the biggest problem with Mozilla preferences, in that many of them can be obtuse at best or outright misleading or broken at worst. We're attempting to document as many of these preferences as possible. If a preference has a description, try right-clicking and selecting "Edit Preference". If there are known options (eg. editor.css.default_length_unit), you will be given a drop-down list of these options and what each means.

We're not there yet by any means, but be patient!

Andreas: I've just updated the FAQ (under Documentation) to deal with this issue. I'm not running a Linux machine here, so the Linux permissions aren't correct. Setting permissions to chmod -R 644 * seems to fix this problem.
